Oral Practice
As requested, I have posted up some passages and pictures for your own practice.

Reading Aloud

Passage 1

(Mary was about ten years old)(when the accident happened.)( A bus she was on skidded on a wet road)(. Some of the passengers,)( including Mary,)( fell off their seats.)( Mary hurt her foot )(and had to be sent to a nearby clinic.)( The doctor advised her to rest at home for a week)( because she had sprained her ankle.)

(Mary was disappointed)( about missing school )(but a visit by some of her classmates changed that.)( She discovered something about them)( which she had never known.)( Hannah and Mei Ling,)( two quiet girls in her class,)( cheered her up with gifts of flowers.)( Alex and Muthu, )(whom she had always thought of as naughty boys,)( brought books and magazines)( to help her spend her time.)

(“Thank you, everyone.)( It’s very nice of you to come and visit me.)( I really appreciate it,” )(said Mary,)( forgetting the pain in her ankle.)
(Although Mary missed school because of the accident,)( she gained something else. ) (She had found four kind)( and caring friends.)

The brackets show you where to break up your sentences.

Passage 2

“Do you want to go to the wet market with me?” Mrs Fong asked her daughter. “Yes!” Ling Ling replied enthusiastically. Her mother smiled. She was pleased that that Ling Ling could accompany her there as she intended to buy many things and could do with an extra pair of hands. Ling Ling quickly changed into a faded T-shirt and a pair of old jeans and they were soon out of the house.

After a brisk walk, they reached their destination. As it was a Sunday morning, the wet market was a hive of activity. People were jostling their way through the crowded place and customers were busy haggling over prices. A large variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry and meat were on display.

“Juicy mangoes from the Philippines! Special offer! Today only!” called the fruit seller invitingly. “Mum, shall we get some?” Ling Ling suggested. Mrs Fong nodded. After choosing a few mangoes. she bargained expertly with the food seller and managed to get a good discount. Then, they proceeded to the other stalls.

Preparation For Oral Examinations
Here's a short video clip to help you prepare for the upcoming oral examination.

The clip is originally produced for the PSLE oral, thus the difference in the examining components. Nevetheless, I found it exceptionally useful.

For P4, the components will only consist of:
1. Reading Aloud (5 marks)
2. Picture Conversation (10 marks)

The total obtainable marks is 15.

Click here to view the video clip!

More Tips!

DO
  1. Do describe in an orderly manner (clockwise / anti-clockwise)
  2. Do use other forms of expressions like 'I feel', 'In my opinion', 'Perhaps', 'Maybe' and 'Most probably', instead of just 'I think'
  3. Do support your interpretation with your opinions or explanations
  4. Do point out anti-social (inconsiderate) acts

DON'T

  1. Don't use points of reference (e.g. top left-hand corner)
  2. Don't point at the picture
  3. Don't tell a story or give names to the people in the picture.

It's all in a State of Mind
If you think you are beaten, you are:
If you think you dare not, you won't
If you like to win, but don't think you can
It's almost certain you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in the world you'll find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in a state of mind.

For many a game is lost,
Before even a play is run,
And many a coward fails
Before even his work begun.

Think big and your deeds will grow,
Think small and you'll fall behind;
Think that you CAN and you WILL;
It's all in a state of mind.

If you think you are out-classed, you are;
You've got to think high to rise;
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.

Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the fellow who thinks he can.
